Playing your Native American style flute

All of our flutes are 5 hole flutes which is by far the most common type of original Native American flute, the common 6 hole flute is completely modern and has no historical evidence of being made by Native Americans. This means your flute will connect you with a rich historical past, sounding just like that of the originals, our designs are based on original designs.

Whichever flute your buy will be in a key of a certain note, this is the bottom note (played when all fingering are covered), The 5 holes play the minor pentatonic of the bottom note and mixed fingerings as shown on the diagram allow you to play the standard scale. The far right hand flute shows the fingerings used to play the note played by a 6 hole flute when uncovering the third fingering.

If your flute doesn't sound right (or doesn't make a sound at all), your soundblock has likely shifted. Adjust it so you can just about see the end of the track and move it backwards and forwards slightly until you find the sweet spot. This soundblock can also be purposefully moved slightly forwards (away from the mouthpiece) or backwards to make the notes slightly sharper or flatter, respectively.

Our flutes can also be tuned to any frequency you want at no extra expense. We are always welcome to enquiries about specific custom flutes (woods, styles, notes, etc), and custom soundblocks. However, there is no guarantee your flute will stay perfectly "in-tune" over the years, if you want an orchestral instrument look somewhere else, Native American flutes are beautiful and have such a magical sound because it is entirely the wood speaking to you, if it's telling you it wants to change; let it.
